“Well, he’s a connection to someone I never knew, and even though I hate him, I find myself taking his picture out and staring at it.” She looked at him. “You’re a connection too, you know”

He smiled at her, and they sat in silence for a moment. “Well, we leave in the morning—if you still want to go.”

“I want to. I have to see him. I have to see where this takes me.”

Crawford rose from his chair. “It’s late. I’ll show you the guest room; you can sleep there.”

Crawford got her bag and led her upstairs to the guest room.

“It’s got its own shower and bath, clean towels, too. I’m right down the hall if you need anything.” “This is perfect, thank you so much,” she said.

She looked at him as he stood in the doorway and felt another moment of awkwardness between them.

Crawford took a step backward and pointed to his room. “In there, if you want anything.” “Thanks,” Helen said, and closed the door to her room.

She undressed and took a hot shower, shampooing her hair three times, then dried herself, combed out her hair, and slipped into a new pair of flannel pajamas.

She turned the light off, then slid underneath the covers. As she drifted off to sleep, she thought only of Jack Crawford and how much she liked being with him.
